RedBag for School Teachers and Students

My school adopted RedBag in the fall of 2021. It has transformed lockdown drills from a scary, isolated time filled with unknowns to a communicative and proactive system. RedBag provides me with communication to first responders in a dangerous situation and a toolbox with the kind of life saving equipment I may need.

RedBag’s messaging technology allows teachers to know what is happening outside of their classroom and gives us timely information regarding how to keep students safe.

My name is Kathryn Wells. I am the Reading Director and a reading interventionist at Eaglecrest High School in Aurora, Colorado. Before coming to Eaglecrest, I also taught at the elementary level. I have two sons in the district, ages 13 and 15, and I’ve been married to a SouthMetro Fire Captain for the last twenty years. My husband specializes in hazmat and active threat situations. As such, and because of the surge in school shootings in recent years, school safety is a frequent topic of conversation at my house. Again and again, I’ve heard the stories of helpless teachers trapped in their classrooms for hours with scared students or even injured children.

When it comes to my classroom, I have an entire toolbox of techniques and strategies to teach any struggling child to learn to read. That’s my passion, my purpose. My calling has always been education…and there’s something innate among us teachers: we’ll move mountains for students. Always.

That said, I don’t have any medical training, and when I put myself in the shoes of the teachers who have dealt with school shooting tragedies, I’ve felt unprepared, alone, and scared. RedBag has changed that.

RedBag’s messaging technology allows teachers to know what is happening outside of their classroom and gives us timely information regarding how to keep students safe. In a dangerous situation, our minds can run wild. It is calming to know that with RedBag we are kept up-to-date with the dangers we cannot see, we’re made aware of when an event has concluded, and we’re told when we are simply waiting for first responders to stabilize the scene. Being able to relay appropriate information to students can also help reduce the anxiety of scared teens in a locked down classroom.

RedBag not only adds a layer of communication to unsafe situations, it provides me with a toolbox of emergency supplies needed in a medical emergency. Should someone need medical attention, RedBag allows me to be proactive until medical help can arrive. Time is of the essence! Not only am I provided the supplies needed, but I have access to the steps I need to follow to potentially save a life. I am no longer helpless in the case of medical emergencies or with injured kids.

While I never thought that RedBag would be something that teachers would need in our careers, it gives me peace of mind that, should the unthinkable happen, I can better do what teacher do: absolutely anything for our kids.
